Here Are The Hard Facts
According to the
National Safety Council

Police Cars

* Emergency Lights and/or Sirens in use.
(Above data was provided to the National Safety Council by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the year 1998)

It only stands to reason that because police cars are on the road more than any other type of emergency vehicle, they will sustain the highest number of traffic accidents. As indicated in the chart above, nearly half of the traffic accidents suffered by this category of emergency vehicles occurs while traveling with lights and/or sirens on.

These factors all combine to put police officers, deputy sheriffs and highway patrol troopers at the highest risk of injury and death due to preventable collisions between emergency vehicles and civilian motorcars!
